Renewable energy communities: Do they have a business case in Flanders?

Renewable energy communities (RECs) are prominent initiatives to provide end consumers an active role in the sector, raise awareness on importance of renewable (RE) technologies and increase their share system thus reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The economic viability RECs though, depends multiple interdependent factors that require careful examination for each individual context. This study aims at investigating impact electricity tariffs, ratio electrification heating transportation sectors, prices RE storage systems, internal exchange annual cost provision a REC its GHG A mixed-integer linear model is developed minimize costs representative Flanders, Belgium. results indicate have potential reduce these by 10 26% emissions 5 13% compared business-as-usual. reduction type tariffs level uptake flexible assets such as heat pumps electric vehicles. shift towards higher power component tariff makes systems more attractive, which leads self-consumption. introduction adds possibility demand when lower installed capacities photovoltaic economically viable due total demand. However, smart-homes amounts only 4%–6% best cases. Uncertainties stemming from setting up may estimated benefits.
